German South West Africa ran on a simple transfer: Herero cattle and Herero land moving, debt by debt and fence by fence, into settler hands. In January 1904 the Herero rose under Samuel Maharero.

The lesson the elders kept: Genocide leaves a paper trail. The order was written, the camps were ledgered, the skulls were catalogued. Denial is therefore a choice, and so is remembrance.
