Sundiata's triumph over Sosso did not remain one battlefield's glory; the Mande clans turned that victory into covenant, tribute, cavalry and law, and Mali began to gather the roads around itself.

The lesson the elders kept: Gold made Mali famous, but organization made Mali possible. A ruler may dazzle the world for a season; a system teaches the road to remember him.
